About Us: Karen M. Williams

All great art is made from talent, knowledge and practice. Sewing is no exception, and Karen M. Williams, founder of Sewendipity Lounge, has more than enough to share. Her love of sewing began in the 1950s with her mother who made many outfits for Karen and her two younger sisters. The girls spent their summers at Sears and Roebucks (then at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Reading Road) in sewing classes. To this day, Karen cherishes the diplomas she earned through the “Sears Simplified Dressmaking Course” taught by Mrs. Dorothy Beam where she built a strong foundation in the principles of constructing simple garments and the traditional methods for tailoring a suit.

Karen went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) in Huntsville, Alabama. While at school she sewed for friends and showcased her garments on the college runway. After graduation, she employed her skills as an Extension Home Economics Agent with The Ohio State University in Springfield, Ohio (Clark County), leading clothing construction and accessories classes and working with the 4-H clothing program. Karen also spent several years judging and managing style revues across the United States before returning to school to earn her master's degree in Home Economics Education and Media.

The Cincinnati native came back to her hometown as a Home Economics teacher for Cincinnati Public Schools where she introduced clothing construction to the curriculum. A few years later, she accepted a Cincinnati-based role with The Ohio State University as a Family and Consumer Science Agent. Her formal training in clothing construction, fitting, color analysis and design continued, and she passed the knowledge along through her own sewing seminars for women. Karen was promoted to Hamilton County chair of the local Extension office and later transitioned to a role as Urban Extension Specialist throughout Ohio.

With the encouragement of family, friends and her husband, Kenneth, Karen found the courage to embark on the newest phase of her journey. In 2015, she laid out plans for Sewendipity Lounge, “a place where garments are created with a dip of chic.”

“For so many years, people would always ask if I could either sew for them or show them how to sew,” Karen explained. “Clothing is both necessary and aesthetic. Being able to sew well provides a sense of accomplishment and purpose, which is what I'd like to inspire at Sewendipity Lounge.”
